September 2019 Newsletter

Love in Solitude, AAO Solo Series, The Arvo Pärt Centre, Italy, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more...

Greetings!

The year is flying along, and these final few months will see many travels, recordings (live & studio), collaborations & premiers!

I'm thrilled to have been nominated for a few awards, including The Australian Music Prize (for Transients Volume 1), and the Art Music Award for Excellence in Jazz, plus an Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Australian Jazz Ensemble (Five Below Live).

Ensemble Offspring, who worked with me on my Merlyn Myer Composing Womens Commission Love in Solitude are currently on a European Tour, and I am honoured that they will continue to perform my piece (inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet) as part of The Night With... portion of the tour.
They even had my old friend and colleague Peter Humble create an extraordinary video to accompany their recording of Love in Solitude! You can watch it here.

I'm grateful to have been included in the Australian Art Orchestra's Solo Series in celebration of their 25th year. You can watch my contribution here with thoughtful words from artistic director Peter Knight.

Also happening this month - I'll be in Estonia visiting the Arvo Pärt Centre again as part of my PhD research, followed by some performances in Italy with saxophonist Mirko Guerrini. Plus, the launch of incredible singer/composer Elly Hoyt's fantastic new album The Composers' Voice: Celebrating Australian Women Composers promises to be a great night!

My regular Monday nights at the Jazzlab continue, including the  Mondays Live at the Jazzlab recording project that features a duo with Stephen Magnusson this month. Also part of this months program is an 'unplugged' night with Elly Hoyt while she's here on her album launch/Freedman Fellowship tour.  Five Below continues to work up new repertoire for our first studio recording that is coming up in October, with a performance that includes formidable saxophonists Scott McConnachie & Julien Wilson, as well as Jim Keller voice/spoken word.

Transients - a series of trios presented every Thursday night at Uptown Jazz Cafe in Fitzroy continues this month with an awesome line up of musicians such as Flora Carbo, Robbie Finch, Hiroki Hoshino & Sam Bates. Here is a review of the album Transients Volume 1 by John Shand.

While I'm in Europe Mark Fitzgibbon, Darrin Archer and Steve Grant are all filling in for me with their trios at both Jazzlab and Uptown.
Full details on the various personnel listings for my Monday nights at the Jazzlab and Transientson Thursday nights at Uptown Jazz Cafe can be found below.

I hope to see you out there :)

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!

Girls Do Jazz Workshops, Johannes Luebbers Dectet, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more...

Greetings!

Despite the thick of winter, and university being back in semester, there's still so much great live music to experience in Melbourne!

My regular Monday nights at the Jazzlab continue. This month marks the start of a live trio recording project that will run through to the end of the year. I'm planning some small digital releases Live at the Jazzlab - Monday nights to document, share and celebrate all the brilliant music that's created in that special jazz hub tucked away in Brunswick! The Piano Club continues to create a beautiful evening for all involved, and this month features Luke Howard & Lena Douglas. As Five Below prepare for our first studio recording in October, we invite two special guests to assist in unveiling new compositions - formidable saxophonists Scott McConnachie & Julien Wilson will join us and take the music to another level!

The Girls Do Jazz workshops (facilitated through the University of Melbourne) begin Sunday week. There are still places available, so if you know a young person that plays an instrument, is interested in extending their musical experience to include jazz & improvisation, and would benefit form a community of like-minded female and GNC students between the ages 13-20, please direct them to the link and information further down this newsletter!

Transients - a series of trios presented every Thursday night at Uptown Jazz Cafe in Fitzroy continues this month with an awesome line up of musicians such as Christopher Hale, James McLean, Sam Anning, Sam Bates, Julien Wilson, Hiroki Hoshino, Lewis Pierre-Humbert, Angela Davis & Theo Carbo.

Sunshine in Queensland, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more...

Greetings!

Things are relatively quiet on the gig-front for me in Melbourne this month, as I'm heading to Queensland on two occasions during July - firstly, for a much needed holiday, and secondly, to be a jazz judge at the Aspire Festival on the Gold Coast. In my absence I have some brilliant musicians filling in for me at both my Jazzlab and Uptown residencies, including Xani Kolac, Tony, Gould, and Sam Keevers!!!

Five Below's performance in the Elizabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre last night supporting German neo-classical pianist Hauschka was a lot of fun. I still have a limited number of Hoodies available (4 to be precise) - you can reply to this email, visit my Bandcamp page, or come to a Five Below gig (generally the last monday of the month) at the Jazzlab to purchase one.

The recent Piano Club gig with Steve Grant & Darrin Archer at the Jazzlab was a beautiful night. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to present events like this on a regular basis at the Jazzlab. The next one (Monday July 22) will be a ripper with Tony Gould & Harry Cook.

Full details on the various personnel listings for my Monday nights at the Jazzlab and Thursday nights at Uptown Jazz Cafe can be found below.

I hope to see you out there :)

May 2019 Newsletter

Transients album, The Australian Art Orchestra, Stonnington Jazz Festival, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more...

Greetings!

I hope all is well in your worlds :)

Transients Volume 1 will be officially released tomorrow!!
The music on the album was recorded in October last year, and has been brought to life by an amazing crew of people including Flora Carbo (alto saxophone), Julien Wilson (tenor saxophone, clarinet & bass clarinet), James Macaulay (trombone), Sam Anning (double bass), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Leigh Fisher (drums), Christopher Hale (bass guitar) & James McLean (drums), plus sound engineer Ross Cockle & mixing/mastering by Philip Rex, and beautiful cover art by Luke Fraser.
You can purchase hard copy and digital versions online from my website or Bandcamp.
Over the two days in the studio in 2018 we managed to record enough material for two albums, so expect volume 2 later in 2019...

Speaking of Transients, I'm joined by Stephen Magnusson & Leigh Fisher tonight at Uptown Jazz Cafe in Melbourne. This is one of my favourite trios. Please join us if you can!

Speaking of albums, I've spent the last few months buying back my old albums from record companies, and now have nearly all for sale through my website and bandcamp page. (Links as above). These include very limited copies (1 or 2) of Mikrokosmos, Angels & Rascals, and Footprints, plus Wave Rider, Galumphing 'Round the Nation, Little Claps, Three Lanes, and Family Portraits, and of course the more recent Still Night, Five Below, and The Komeda Project.

I'm thrilled that a mini solo piano piece I wrote as a dedication when my youngest child was born, Deep Blue, features on Move 50 - a celebration of 50 years of Move records in Australia. The most thrilling part is that it's played by Michael Kieran Harvey and he makes it sound SO good!!! So, so good, that I think I need to employ him to perform all my compositions in lieu of me...
You can check out the album here.

Upcoming activity this month includes performances at the Stonnington Jazz Festival with Kathleen Halloran, the Sam Anning Sextet, and The Australian Art Orchestra, plus a recording with the AAO of two stunning programs we performed last year in London and Poland.
Below you will find a list of all the May gigs I'm involved in.

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!

Warmest,
Andrea

Transients volume 1 **new album**, Wilson/Anning/Keller @ MRC, Piano Club, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown...

Greetings!

I hope all is well in your worlds :)

I'm currently working on releasing the first of a series of albums by a mix of Transient trios, that will be on sale late in April, coinciding with a performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre Salon by the Wilson/Anning/Keller combination. More info below.
The music on the album has been brought to life by an amazing crew of people including Flora Carbo (alto saxophone), Julien Wilson (tenor saxophone, clarinet & bass clarinet), James Macaulay (trombone), Sam Anning (double bass), Stephen Magnusson (guitar), Leigh Fisher (drums), Christopher Hale (bass guitar) & James McLean (drums), plus sound engineer Ross Cockle & mixing/mastering by Philip Rex. Watch this space for purchase details.

Below you will find a list of all the April gigs I'm involved in. I'm excited to be starting up a new series as part of my Monday nights at the Jazzlab - Piano Club! There are so many fantastically interesting and diverse piano players in Melbourne/Australia, and we don't get to hear each other play and hang out nearly enough! The Piano Club nights aim to bring our community together, and will feature 3 pianists playing a solo set each. The first incarnation on April 22 will feature Nathan Liow, Sam Keevers and myself.

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!
Warmest,
Andrea

March 2019 Newsletter

Adelaide Festival, Sirens Big Band in NSW, plus Mondays @ the Jazzlab and Transient Thursdays @ Uptown and more!

Greetings!

Although it's now autumn in Australia, the summer spell is still strong in Melbourne :)

I had a busy February composing new music for a series of concerts at the Adelaide Festival later this week. Thanks to my dear friend and inspiring musical companion, Genevieve Lacey, who has curated an incredible weekend of music at the Ukaria Cultural Centre in the Adelaide Hills from this coming Friday to Monday, I've been given the opportunity to spend a week in Adelaide making music with a wealth of early music specialists, contemporary musicians and indigenous singer/songwriters. I'll be premiering two commissioned works Compassionately Yours... (strings, piano & revox), and Home (solo piano). More info below.

Later in March I'll be travelling to NSW to perform Ellen Kirkwood's impressive work [A]part with Sirens Big Band in Bathurst and the Blue Mountains. While there, I'll also be playing a short duo set with another dear friend and mentor Sandy Evans. See below for more information.

Below you will find a list of all the March gigs I'm involved in. While I'm away in Adelaide, Angela Davis will be filling in for me for this Thursdays Transients at Uptown, with her trio featuring the incredibles - Tony Gould & Sam Anning.
Flora Carbo will be covering next Monday at the Jazzlab with her new band 'Polly' featuring great young artists Scott van Gemert, Patrick Jaffe & Robbie Finch.
Tonight, it's a special Composers Circle at the Jazzlab, because it's James Macaulay's last gig with us before he relocates to Japan. He will be missed, but he will be back! And in the meantime we'll be joined by young trombone stars: Scott van Gemert, Callum Mintzis and Josh Bennier :)

Thanks for reading and supporting creative Australian music!

Warmest,
Andrea
